there are four children living with their incarcerated mothers at this young women's prison. This is the senior warden giving gifts provided by El Barrios for Christ. More on this little guy later.
can you imagine your early childhood being behind bars? This little one spends most of the day locked inside a human warehouse... they get to see all the interaction of inmates and hear all the cussing, etc.
There are four pregnant ladies in the prison as well. They were blessed with gift bags for the little ones to come again by El Barrios for Christ.
Here is el Tigre (the Tiger) going after the pinata. Many of the teenage girls here (age 13 to 18) have never celebrated birthdays with their own pinatas. We had three riding in the car with us. Looking in the rear view mirror would have freaked out a lesser man.
OK I did not have my camera with me when this little one was part of El Tigres del Norte (the Tigers of the North). He had Cowboy Hat, black outfit and boots and was the lead singer. He had some moves and a mustache and goatee that was rapidly fading by this time.
Three of the staff for El Barrios for Christ. We are praying for support (400$ per month) so one of these can go 5-6 days a week to this prison for chaplaincy and counseling support. They volunteer once a day using their own resources to travel, etc.
getting lined up for their turn at the pinatas.
the candy free for all.
Ignacio and I teaching about God's example and challenge to dad's. Most teenagers in prison share one thing in common. They don't have dads. In the gang culture many men die young, or they move to another region/country and abandon their families. That doesn't change God's example and desire to be a Father to the fatherless...
Chicken marinated in a mustard sauce. This is Sandra's recipe and I have had it a couple of times... it is AWESOME...we also had chorizo/sausage, beans and rice, cake for desert.... hey I didn't get any cake.
The line seemed continuous for quite awhile. there was enough food for all. There is much room for ministry here. El Barrios for Christ is being used by God to open doors. I am challenging churches to walk through these openings exist in this administration... this is Guatemalan and things change sometimes dramatically with the change of administration.
